A Note on the Results of Cultural and Serological Tests for Pleuropneumonia-like Organisms

چکیده

The isolation of pleuropneumonia-like organisms (PPLO) from the urethral secretions of patients with non-gonococcal urethritis has been reported by many workers and has led to the suggestion that they may be a possible cause of this condition, although they have also been found in the genital tract of apparently healthy males. Other organisms of the pleuropneumonia group are known to be associated with genital infection in animals, and the frequency of joint lesions in infections with some rat strains has led to the search for PPLO in cases of Reiter's disease, especially as Dienes, Ropes, Smith, Madoff, and Bauer (1948) have reported the isolation of PPLO from synovial fluid obtained from an affected joint in this condition. Subsequent work has not lent support to this view, and Kleineberger-Nobel (1959b) grew PPLO from the urethra of only two out of twenty patients with Reiter's disease and from none of the specimens of joint fluid examined. Because further information seemed desirable, patients with Reiter's disease attending The London Hospital have been examined by cultural and serological methods for evidence of the presence of PPLO and an attempt has been made to relate the bacteriological findings to the stage of the disease and to the effects of treatment.

PPLO of human genital origin; serological classification of strains and antibody distribution in man.

Pleuropneumonia-like organisms (PPLO) have frequently been isolated from the human genital tract since the first report by Dienes and Edsall (1937); their presence in the urethral discharge of patients with non-gonococcal urethritis (N.G.U.) aroused interest because of the unknown aetiology of the disease. The significance ofPPLO in the genital tract and their association with N.G.U. are disput...

Metabolic studies on three strains of Pleuropneumonia-like organisms isolated from man.

The peculiar type of growth common to Asterococcus mycoides (Pleuropneumonia bouum), pleuropneumonia-like organisms (PPLO), and L forms of bacteria has lead to confusion and controversy. This controversy involves the interrelationships of these groups and of strains within the groups as well as their relation to bacteria in general. Excellent reviews by Sabin (1941), Elleneberger-Nobel (1951), ...

Cultural Characters and Serological Relationships of Some Mycoplasmas Isolated from Bovine Sources

Cultural characteristics and serological relationships of mycoplasmas from the bovine vagina, mastitic milk, and other sources were studied. Parasitic strains could be distinguished from saprophytic strains in that they required incorporation of horse serum into the PPLO agar for growth, produced surface crystallization on PPLO agar and did not ferment carbohydrates. All strains were haemolytic...

Antibodies against pleuropneumonia-like organisms in patients with salpingitis.

Since the first report of Dienes and Edsall (1937), a number of communications have recorded the isolation of pleuropneumonia-like organisms (PPLO) from the genital tract of the human female, especially in association with inflammatory diseases such as bartholinitis, pelvic abscess, and salpingitis (Melen and Odeblad, 195 1; Randall, Stein, and Ayres, 1950; Dienes, Ropes, Smith, Madoff, and Bau...
